A patent application from Google has recently been uncovered which appears to deal with potential methods of advertising in Google Maps’ Streetview feature.
The patent discusses how clickable advertisements could potentially be placed on images of business store fronts that have been captured by Google’s Streetview cameras. At the moment, Streetview is a stunning resource but there is no way for the images to be kept up to date. As such, many store will be advertising products, service and prices that are likely no longer relevant or valid. With the potential advertising system the business owners would be able to place, and regularly update adverts that would provide Streetview users with up-to-date prices and information. For users this could also be beneficial, you could potentially walk down the virtual incarnation of your local high street and browse all of the special offers available from the comfort of your home.
Although there are a number of benefits to the suggested system there could also be some problems it might run into. For example, how would it be decided who could advertise where? Would there be the potential for one store to pay to advertise on a competitors business for example? Despite this, the advertising method is an intriguing proposition and it will be interesting to see if anything comes from this patent.
