Chrome is Catching Up

New statistics released by Net Applications show that Google’s Chrome web browser is hot on the heels of the competition. Their statistics, based on a report generated this morning, make interesting reading for Chrome advocates and for its competitors.

The statistics show that Chrome’s percentage of market share rose between January 2010 and May 2010 by 1.83%. That is a jump from 5.22% up to 7.05% in the space of 5 months. Meanwhile, Internet Explorers market share dropped by 2.43%. That’s a drop from 62.12% in January 2010 down to 59.69% in May 2010. In fact if you’re interested, since June 2008 Internet Explorer has dropped from 75.36%. That’s a drop of 15.67%. If they keep going like this it is possible to speculate that as soon as 2015 IE’s market share could have dipped to just 22% while Chromes may have risen to having (as their market share was 0% in June 2008) roughly 24% market share.

Also, Firefox had 18.92% market share in June 2008, now has a 24.35% market share, so judging by that trend it could have roughly 40% of the market share! Crikey!

While these future statistics are purely speculative, the current research by Net Applications has certainly highlighted the rapidly changing browser market share war, which has largely raging against Microsoft for several years. Maybe finally we can see some sort of satisfactory conclusion, whereby there is a fair share for everyone. But then again, who knows what developers have in their war chests. IE9 anyone?

Net Applications stats are based on activity and not on the number of people using a particular browser, as they log page loads on the sites they monitor. With the number of people using the internet increasing daily, even if there is more activity on a particular browser, it does not necessarily mean that they have the market share.

  • The sooner there is no IE the better. I personally favour Chrome and Firefox as my second choice.

Microsoft just continue to ignore their customers and bring out the same rubbish. They just don’t seem to get it.
